I use cloth full time- I started doing cloth when my son was born (I did a LOT of research while pregnant) and he is now 12 months.I don't have a favourite brand, my favourite style is the one size pocket as you can get away with a smaller 'stash' because they dry quicker than all in ones, plus one size pockets can be got cheaply brand new from ebay! In theory one size pockets should fit a regular sized child right up to three years of age.Prefolds are one I didn't try- they DO need covers as they do not have an inbuilt waterproofing layer. Until my son got mobile I used terry flats- he won't stay still long enough for me to put a multilayer system on him now!General advice- dry pail, that is do NOT soak the nappies as soaking them causes them to stink up the house something shocking.Invest in a wetbag- this is a cloth bag that you store used nappies in, these are the BEST thing for odour reduction and as they are far more breathable than a bucket the nappies are not stewing in wet ammonia.A diaper sprayer or bidet sprayer is a godsend for a solids fed child- I read that poo would just roll off the nappy into the toilet, doesn't happen with MY son's poo! I have found though that if you have a GOOD washing machine you can skip the poo removal if you wash daily- my Bosch max 1000 on the prewash rinse stains cycle with a postwash rinse will get rid of the poo without my having to rinse the nappies before washing! The most likely stains you will encounter are breastfed poo (bright orangy yellow) and sorbitol (dark blue black- comes from infant pain medications). The poo stains are EASY to remove- after washing just hang them up in the sunlight to dry. Sorbitol stains are a bit harder- these need to be rinsed as soon as they come off the bub and need several high water rinses and drying in UV light between rinses. Don't worry about food stains- my son has tried just about EVERYTHING food wise and unless you wash in hot water ALL stains do come out.
