Can you put water in a baby's bottle?

Postby MrsC » Sat May 01, 2010 5:22 pm

I've recently started weaning my son and I want to give him water with his meals. He won't drink form a sippy cup, I've tried but he can't quite get the hang of it yet.Would it be ok to give him water in his bottle? I don't want to get into a habit which is difficult to break, but I feel he needs to drink when he's having his solids meal. I was thinking of giving him both, water in a bottle sohe can have a drink and also giving him water in a sippy cup to get him used to it.What do you think? Any suggestions? Thanks for your timeHe's 5.5 months

What a STUBBORN BABY! IF HE DOESNT DRINK THE WATER, WELL TOO BAD, LET HIM SUFFER. You need to put your foot down now, or he'll grow up always wanting HIS WAY. You need to PUNISH THAT KID, HE KNOWS WHAT HES DOING

Yes but water is thin. You may need to use a smaller cut nipple.Water moves to fast through the milk nipples sometimes and the baby chokes.

Of course you can, Its good to try get him drinking. You dont say how old your son is hun but if your just weaning i'm guessing he may just be a tad to young to get the hang of a sippy cup but having it around for him to practice grabbing is good hun. My youngest is 6mths & wont drink anything cold, it all has to be fair warm wether juice, water or milk. Leave the bottle within reach but always offer the sippy cup eventually he will get used to it & realise you want him to take that, Gradually reduce the amount of time the bottle is around & have the sippy cup around more, There is no rush so patience & you will get there x

You don't say how old your little one is? But yes it's fine to give him water in a bottle. As someone else said, remember water will come out faster. Keep trying with the sippy cup though, perhaps replacing one drink a day with the cup? A bottle won't do him ANY harm though.

If you are still breastfeeding, or giving him formula, then don't worry, he is getting plenty of liquid this way. And if he is under one then you *should* be giving him either one of these as he will still need the nutrition he gets from this while he's learning to eat solids. It's fine to give him water in a bottle if you want to, it shouldn't be a problem to wean him off it onto a sippy cup later if he's not ready for this yet. Keep offering the sippy cup at regular intervals and if he has older siblings or sees older children using one, he'll probably want to anyway.Until he is 1 year old you should boil and cool the water before giving it to him to make sure there are no tummy-upsetting bugs. Even 'town supply' water (as opposed to water tank) can have water-borne illnesses like giardia which your baby isn't old enough to cope with very well. If you have a water tank you should keep boiling it until at least 2 years old. Also remember that not all bottled water is suitable for babies as it may have minerals and things a baby's system can't deal with.

There is nothing wrong with putting water in a bottle. My son refused to drink out of sippy cups, they were either too fast flow or a weird nipple and he would give up. Try using one when he is not fussy or real hungry otherwise he will not have the patience. So the first link I posted is the usual nipple for a sippy cup (square and leaks) stay away for a starter. Use the one with the second link. My son loves it!I recently bought the Nuby Insulated Flip Top Cap Sippy Cup. I bought it at CVS for about $4.50USD. In the package the cup is upside down. When you unscrew the lid there is this white thing on the sip part you can turn it upside down for fast or slow, just read it. :)Hope this helps. The picture is hard to see detail.

Yes you can. It's no a problem. It is not advisable to put anything other than water of milk in a bottle though, as with sweet drinks it prolongs the time that the sugar is in contact with the babies gums/teeth.Try and find a free flow sippy cup instead of one where he has to suck to get the water out and help him with it, its a bit easier.
